At some point in your ACT journey, its normal to get frustrated. You might even throw up your hands and ask: Is the ACT necessary? Well, the ACT (or the SAT) is necessary to apply to the vast majority of colleges and scholarships in the United States. So for the moment, the short answer is yes! Dont let this be you. But dont let your frustration get you down! The fact that youre taking the ACT is actually a good thing A Little History Until about 100 years ago, if you wanted to go to college, you pretty much had to be rich. The college application process was as simple as, â€Å"Let’s see†¦this applicant comes from money†¦and his dad went here. He’s in!† Though good for a select few, most Americans couldn’t go to college. Then a little thing called the Progressive Era happened. If someone wanted to work for the government, that person now had to take a test to prove that he or she (usually he, though) was smart enough for the job. Gone were the days when being someone’s cousin was enough to get a cushy job as postal inspector. Colleges soon saw how this might make their student bodies smarter. By the 1920s, America’s Ivy League universities were giving the first standardized test to students. These early tests would eventually evolve into the SAT. After World War II, colleges across the nation threw open their doors to returning soldiers hoping to further their education for free or cheaply with GI Bill benefits. Thanks to the SAT and then ACT, the doors have stayed open ever since. But How is the ACT Necessary for MY Success? Lets get right down to it. First of all, there is no perfect instrument to level the playing field for millions of high school students. That being said, let’s go through how the work you put in now for the ACT can help you later. The first benefit is (hopefully) obvious: college admissions. Though colleges are beginning to move towards a more holistic, or well rounded, approach to admissions, ACT (or SAT) scores are still key for getting in to most competitive schools. The second benefit is that a high ACT score will make you eligible for many scholarship opportunities. With the price of college skyrocketing over the last few decades, every scholarship dollar you earn means less, or even no, debt in your future. In short, your future self will thank you if you apply yourself now. Final Thoughts I truly understand how frustrating the ACT can become. But don’t let temporary frustration make you lose sight of your post-high school goals! And for now, the ACT is still one of the few keys that will unlock your future as a college student. A countrys boundaries, as well as the shape of the land it encompasses, can present problems or help to unify the nation. The morphology of most countries can be divided into five main categories: compact, fragmented, elongated, perforated, and protruded. As you might expect, the Philippines has been attacked, invaded, and occupied numerous times over the centuries due to its fragmented shape, starting in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan  claimed the islands for Spain.   Elongated An elongated or attenuated nation such as  Chile  makes for difficult governance of peripheral areas in the north and south, which are from the central capital of Santiago. Vietnam is also an elongated state, which has battled numerous attempts by other countries to divide it, such as the 20-year  Vietnam War, where first French and then U.S. forces tried unsuccessfully to keep the southern part of the nation separated from the north. Perforated South Africa  is a classic example of a perforated state, which surrounds  Lesotho. The surrounded nation of Lesotho can only be reached by going through South Africa. If the two nations are hostile, access to the surrounded nation can be difficult. Italy is also a perforated state. Vatican City  and  San Marino—both independent countries—are surrounded by Italy. Protruded A protruded, or panhandle country such as  Myanmar (Burma)  or Thailand has an extended arm of territory. Like an elongated state, the panhandle complicates the management of the country. Beauty Ideals around the World When talking about beauty one must keep an open mind. What one finds true beauty someone else might find outrageous, weird or even ugly. There is no such thing as ultimate true beauty because you can not compare beauty. We do not live all following the same standards or principles; we do not have the same ideals. We are different, so is beauty. In Asia for example the standards for beauty differ from country to country, from culture to culture. In the Far East, in Japan, a century old tradition offers an original beauty recipe treatment: nightingale droppings. These are transformed into a powder, mixed with soap and used as a face wash. The term political scientist has been used to describe both Aristotle and Niccolo Machiavelli, but does that term do the work of either man justice? From the outset it is very easy to see the philosophical differences between the two men and their visions of the political system(s).
